Isfahan
Isfahan is a major city in central Iran and has a long and glorious history in carpet literature.
As early as the Safavid dynasty in the 16th century, some of the most significant carpets in history were produced there in the royal workshops. Then again, in the 19th century and especially during the “revival period” until the 1930’s, the Isfahan carpets can be considered as the finest woven carpets in Iran. Nowadays, production continues in the same footsteps, but not at the same heights as in the past.
This circa 1900 rug is from a fine workshop, whereas its design and palette follows the needs of European taste rather than the oriental, which indicates that it was made mainly for export.
